Yes, everything is a bit off centre, he hadn't quite developed the language that would enable him to portray these unfamiliar people. That is the charm of them, I think.

oh dear! these are great!


(small fact nobody needs - some Japanese policemen fell so much in love with these funny canes European gentlemen liked to walk around with that they developed a whole school of European-walking-stick-fighting-technique which was (seriously!) called 'sutikki-jutsu'; mid 19th c.)
