Dresden by moonlight

A tiny nocturnal sketch of the Frauenkirche, no bigger than a postcard, by Johan Cristian Dahl, who was born in Bergen in 1788 and settled in Dresden in 1818. He has intrigued me ever since I saw some of his paintings in Bergen during a trip to Norway as a schoolboy. Some of his cloud-studies are almost as vigorous as those of Constable, while much of his later work follows the German romantic pattern. This painting is currently for sale and would go very nicely above my bed-side table, but I fear that even these few square centimtres are way beyond my means.
