Richard Parkes Bonington (1802-28)

A landscape painter who had a real touch of genius, especially in conveying the atmosphere of moist northern landscapes and coastal scenes; his name would surely be as familiar as those of Constable and Turner if he hadn't died at the age of 26. A watercolour of Rouen.

A coastal scene conveyed through light washes of oil on board; a very characterisitic piece.

An unpretentious but immaculate watercolour recently acquired for the British national collections.

A self-portrait.
