Henri Rivière, prints from the series '36 Views of the Eiffel Tower', 1902

A series of colour lithographs inspired by Hokusai's 36 Views of Mount Fuji. The Japanese influence is obvious, as are the skills had been developed in the making of coloured prints in France in the preceding decade. As in the case of the works of the Czech printmaker Tavik František Šimon, of which I have posted examples previously, Rivière's lithographs deserve to be better known. Fortunately many good images can be seen at an excellent website, from which I selected the examples here:

These prints of Paris are quite varied in character, ranging from the picturesque to the bleak, and covering all the seasons of the year. Less of a visitor's view of the city than in Šimon's lithographs. Later I will post some of Rivière's of the sea and seaside.
