Caspar Wolf, Alpine Sublimities

Since Wolf, who was of Swiss nationality, died in 1783, these paintings, which date from the final years of his life, lie a little outside our period, but they are of interest as forerunners of comparable portrayals of mountain scenes by the German artists of the Romantic period. This is a cave in the Jura. More about him here:
