Lega is the finest Italian painter of the 19th Century in my view (Fattori may be more vigorous but he is less subtle and poetic). An evocative landscape in which the figures are arranged in a strange frieze-like fashion. I imagine that we are supposed to think that the engaged couple are being accompanied by the fiancee's mother and two younger sisters.
