Adalbert Stifter, Moonrise, 1855

A remarkable (if voluminous and entirely untranslatable) novelist and storywriter, Stifter was also a Sunday painter. Although his paintings rarely show any sign of any great originality or proficiency, it is interesting to see him at work in another medium, and this was doubtless a valuable discipline for him; a big selection here, arranged in chronological order:
