Here is a curiosity I picked up recently. Can anyone identify what it is? It was invented in the 1870s to perform a service which would not be required nowadays. There will be a (virtual) prize for anyone who can offer the correct answer!
edit: jennie_jay has found the answer, it's a skirt-lifter, which a woman would use to pull the bottom of her skirt up from the dirt of the streets; more under the comments below.
