Marguerite Gerard, A Lady with her Cat, early 19th Century



Another striking picture by an unremarkable painter, in which the enormous cat rather steals the scene. An attractive composition because the coat of the cat harmonizes so well with the dress of its owner. Marguerite Gerard (1761-1837) specialized in quiet domestic scenes; she was the sister-in-law of Fragonard, who made these two sketches of her:
