Two rooms

The first is by Sargent and the second by Menzel. I was trying to work out why the second is such a very much better painting than the second. Basically, I think, because Sargent painted with such negligent ease that he never really engaged with his subject matter except in his portraits. This painting, like his landscape watercolours, gives one a moment of pleasure as a tour de force and then ceases to be of much interest; but there is something haunting about Menzel's interiors, they appeal to one's imagination like those of Vuillard and Hammershoi.
