Hans Olde (1855-1917) was director of the Grand Ducal art school at Weimar. At the end of his life, after his health and mind had collapsed, Nietzsche was taken into the care of his sister, Elisabeth Förster-Nietzsche, who lived in a villa in Weimar where the Nietzsche archive is now housed. Olde made these portraits of him at that period. The images below show preparatory studies for the painetd portrait, which is not as familiar as the fine etching.
