Carl Gustav Carus, an island in the Elbe near Pillnitz, Saxony



This is very similar to the moonlit landscapes of Johan Christian Dahl, who lived in Dresden, although Norwegian by birth, as did Carus. As a doctor who was a professor of obstetrics and personal physician to the King of Saxony, Carus was only a Sunday painter, and some of his paintings are surprisingly good if one keeps that in mind. He was heavily influenced above all by Caspar David Friedrich.. He accompanied the King on a journey to England and Scotland, and wrote an interesting account of his impressions which was translated into English at the time:
