Thomas Jones, a Welsh landscape

Photobucket

Thomas Jones (1742-1803) was an 18th Century landscape painter who is best remembered for his vivid oil-sketches of Italian scenes; but this is the painting of his that I like best, for the way in which it conveys all the beauty and melancholy of the Welsh hill-country, so utterly different from anything in England. His family owned an estate at Pencerrig in mid-Wales and this shows the local countryside in which he had spent his childhood.
