Two Cloud Studies

Thunder-clouds above Dresden, 1825, by Johan Christian Dahl, a Norwegian who settled in Saxony; while he tends to follow the German romantics in his more elaborate compositions, his best landscape sketches are more reminiscent of Constable. For him too the sky was the main 'organ of feeling' in the landscape, and he was very good at capturing its changing moods and light-effects.

An evening cloud-study by Menzel from 1851. A dashing sketch, but one senses that he was not on the same intimate terms with his subject-matter; he was primarily a man of the city.
